I think the photos tell it all. We arrived in Sydney Harbour the day before New Year's Eve and dropped anchor for the night near Manly, a gorgeous little quiet cove out of sight of the city.
Early the following morning, New Year's Eve, we moved around to Sydney Harbour where we got our first sight of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, one of those sights I'd seen many times in photos and movies and never thought I'd see for myself. Quite a moment.
We arrived early enough to get a spot right beside the Opera House which was the ideal location for a great view of the fireworks around the city and on the bridge. Of course, a hundred other boats were doing the same thing so it was a bit like dodgem cars while all the boats jostled for position in fairly windy conditions in a very crowded space. The afternoon's entertainment was watching some of these maneouvers - quite amusing.
We felt so priveleged to be where we were especially when we could see literally thousands of people waiting along the shoreline, most having grabbed a spot from early in the morning and waiting in the heat all day to retain that position.
Besides the fireworks, there was a great display of two small planes performing aerobatics and a procession of vessels dressed in lights passing through the harbour. The first set of fireworks came on a nine o'clock for the kids with the major one, of course, at midnight.
Fireworks originated from at least five different locations across the city making one's head swing constantly from one side to the other.
Happy New Year to all our family and friends. Our very best wishes for a great 2013.
